Hadith of The Night Journey and Ascension

Al-Isra' wal Mi'raj — the miraculous Night Journey and Ascension of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the heavens.

The Night Journey (Al-Isra) and Ascension (Al-Mi'raj) is one of the most miraculous events in Islamic history — a physical and spiritual journey that took the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah to Jerusalem and then through the seven heavens.

The Setting of the Miraculous Journey

After the death of his beloved wife Khadijah (RA) and his protective uncle Abu Talib — a period the Prophet ﷺ called "the Year of Sorrow" — Allah ﷻ sent Jibreel (Gabriel) to comfort His Prophet with one of the greatest miracles in human history.

One night, while the Prophet ﷺ was sleeping near the Ka'bah, Jibreel came and opened his chest, washed his heart with Zamzam water, filled it with wisdom and faith, and then closed it. The Prophet ﷺ was then carried on a magnificent creature called Al-Buraq — a beast faster than lightning, white in color, with wings and a human face — from the Sacred Mosque in Makkah to the Farthest Mosque (Al-Aqsa) in Jerusalem.

The Journey to Al-Aqsa Mosque

In one night, the Prophet ﷺ traveled from Makkah to Jerusalem, a journey that would normally take weeks or months. There, he led all the previous prophets — including Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), and Isa (Jesus) — in prayer. This demonstrates the Prophet's ﷺ exalted status above all other messengers of Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ was offered two vessels — one containing milk and the other containing wine. He chose the milk, and Jibreel said: "You have chosen the natural disposition (Fitrah). If you had taken the wine, your Ummah would have gone astray."

The Ascension Through the Heavens

From Jerusalem, the Prophet ﷺ ascended through the seven heavens:

  • First Heaven: Met Adam (AS), the father of mankind
  • Second Heaven: Met Isa (Jesus) and Yahya (John the Baptist)
  • Third Heaven: Met Yusuf (Joseph), the most beautiful of Allah's creation
  • Fourth Heaven: Met Idris (Enoch)
  • Fifth Heaven: Met Harun (Aaron)
  • Sixth Heaven: Met Musa (Moses)
  • Seventh Heaven: Met Ibrahim (Abraham)

At each level, the angels welcomed the Prophet ﷺ and asked Jibreel: "Who is this noble traveler?" Jibreel replied: "This is Muhammad, the best of Allah's creation."

The Divine Conversation

Beyond the seventh heaven, the Prophet ﷺ reached a level where he heard the pen writing the destinies of all creation. Then Allah ﷻ spoke to him directly — without any intermediary — and revealed the command of the five daily prayers.

Initially, Allah prescribed 50 prayers per day. As the Prophet ﷺ descended, he passed by Musa (AS), who advised him to request a reduction, saying: "Your Ummah cannot bear fifty prayers. I tried to convince the Children of Israel with less than this, and they gave up." The Prophet ﷺ returned to Allah and requested a reduction, which was granted. He continued going back and forth between Musa and Allah until the prayers were reduced to five — yet the reward remains equal to fifty.

The Gift of Five Prayers: Though only five prayers are obligatory, the Prophet ﷺ was told that whoever performs them faithfully will receive the reward of fifty. This is the mercy and wisdom of Allah upon this Ummah.

Lessons from Al-Isra wal Mi'raj

  • Allah's Power: Nothing is impossible for Allah — He can take His servant anywhere in an instant
  • The Prophet's ﷺ Special Status: Leading all prophets in prayer confirms his leadership of all of mankind
  • The Gift of Salah: Prayer is the most important pillar after the Shahadah — it was gifted directly by Allah
  • Patience in Faith: Even great prophets like Musa urged reduction — showing Allah's understanding of human limitations
  • The Power of Du'a: The Prophet ﷺ was not shy to ask Allah repeatedly for relief — we should do the same

Reflection: Whenever we pray our five daily prayers, we should remember this magnificent journey. Each prostration (Sujud) is an opportunity to connect with Allah — just as the Prophet ﷺ stood before Him on that blessed night.
